The Articles of Conversation: John Banister’s Correspondence with the Founding Fathers (1/4)
Join us for the first installment of Battersea’s Winter Lecture Series, The Articles of Conversation, on Sunday, January 11, from 2:00–4:00 PM.
This engaging lecture will be presented by our very own Historical Researcher Mr. Davis Simmons and Battersea President Mr. Sandy Graham, who will examine the personal and political relationships between Colonel John Banister, Battersea’s first owner, and prominent Founding Fathers including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Patrick Henry.
Drawing from primary source research and original correspondence, the lecture will explore Banister’s role in the mid-to-late 18th century and the broader historical context in which he operated, highlighting his connections to key figures in early American history.
The lecture will last approximately one hour, followed by a Q&A and conversation.
Admission is free, but advance RSVP is required due to limited seating. Please reserve your spot below.
This program marks the first of four lectures hosted at Battersea as we begin commemorating America’s 250th anniversary. If you are unable to attend this lecture, we invite you to join us for one of the upcoming programs in the series.

This talk will last approximately 1 hour, followed by a Q&A and conservation. The history of the natural life and gardens will be the focus of this talk.

Join us for the third installment of Battersea’s Winter 2026 Lecture Series.
Our third lecture will be titled, “British Occupation of Battersea.”
This talk will last approximately 1 hour, followed by a Q&A and conservation. The British military occupation of Battersea during the Revolutionary War will be the focus of this talk.

Join us for the fourth installment of Battersea’s Winter 2026 Lecture Series.
Our fourth lecture will be titled, “Petersburg’s Equestrian History.”
This talk will last approximately 1 hour, followed by a Q&A and conservation. Petersburg’s history of 18th century racetracks and horse breeding will be the focus of this talk.

Oysters, Barbecue...Battersea
Join us in celebrating our 15th annual Oysters, Barbecue...Battersea! The Battersea Foundation is thrilled to be hosting this annual feast once again and welcomes all of our longtime friends and new faces to our beloved celebration. Come enjoy fresh oysters and mouthwatering barbecue in addition to all the classic Southern favorites such as baked beans, coleslaw, corn bread, ginger cookies, and Texas Brownies. Beer, wine, and other refreshments will be provided and we are happy to announce that Kristi Kream and the Sugar Daddies will be returning again this year to perform at the villa. Along with great food and great music, this is the perfect opportunity to enjoy good company and take in the beautiful views of the historic Battersea villa. Our raffle event will take place at 3PM for those who’ve entered in their chance to win a stay in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. We can’t wait to celebrate!

Bring a picnic blanket or chair in case of limited seating.
Parking attendants will be on site to help guests upon arrival.

Art and Floral Inspirations
📅 Mark your calendar! On Saturday, September 27th, there will be a special event at Historic Battersea featuring plein air artists on the grounds painting different views of the Villa and flower arrangers inside the Villa creating floral arrangements based on paintings in the Battersea collection.
🎨 The plein air artists will be at work throughout the day, and you’ll be able to see their brush strokes up close and personal, with some of the paintings going for sale as artists finish.
💐 Inside the Villa there will be two floral presentations, one at 11 AM and one at 1 PM. At those times the arrangers will explain step-by-step how they have interpreted a painting with their selection and arrangement of flowers. In addition there will be fall floral arrangements throughout the Villa.
⭐ All of this is FREE to the public, and it will be happening at Historic Battersea on Saturday, September 27th , from 10 AM to 5 PM. You are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and folding chairs and enjoy spending time on the beautiful grounds of Historic Battersea
